The United States government has decided to establish an “American presence post” in Winnipeg.

Budget cuts closed a former consulate in the city in 1986.

Gordon Giffin, U.S. ambassador to Canada, said the post signals growing ties between his country and Western Canada.

The post will be a three-person office. The U.S. consulate in Calgary will continue to provide consular services for the region.

The U.S. has a similar small post in France.

In a News release

news, Giffin said staff will focus on contacts with provincial and local government officials, media, opinion leaders, businesses and Americans who live in the area.

Staff will monitor agriculture and environmental issues.

Giffin did not announce the post’s location or opening date.
