Global markets: US jobless claims higher, but below expectations

WINNIPEG, February 16 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– US jobless claims in the week ending February 11 increased by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 239,000, according to reports out of the country on Thursday.

That number is below analyst expectations and marks the 102nd week claims have been below 300,000, which indicates a healthy labour force.

– In December, 568,800 Canadians received regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, down 3,200 or 0.6 per cent from the previous month, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.
