ICE Canada canola futures rise on weather woes, tight supplies

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, April 20 (Reuters) – ICE Canada canola futures rose on Thursday, hitting a one-month high for the fourth straight day, on concerns about snowy weather in parts of the Canadian Prairies.

Northern Alberta, where a significant area of last year’s crop remains unharvested, received heavy snow in the past week.

Farmers are reluctant sellers of last year’s crop, lifting cash and futures prices, a trader said.

Statistics Canada will estimate Canadian farmers’ planting intentions on Friday. Trade expects farmers to plant 21.3 million acres of canola, up 5 percent from last year.

May canola gained $3.10 to $519.60 per tonne.

Most active July canola added $3.60 to $515.70 per tonne.

May-July canola spread traded 5,899 times.

Chicago Board of Trade May soybeans dipped on weak export data.

May Paris Liffe rapeseed and June Malaysian palm oil climbed.

The Canadian dollar was trading at $1.3474 to the U.S. dollar, or 74.22 U.S. cents at 12:48 p.m. CDT (1748 GMT), up slightly from Wednesday’s close of $1.3480, or 74.18 U.S. cents.

Light crude oil nearby futures in New York were down 17 cents to US$50.27 per barrel.
In the afternoon, the Canadian dollar was trading around US74.21 cents, up from 74.17 cents the previous trading day. The U.S. dollar was C$1.3475.
