Ian Tyson to receive honorary U of L degree

Country music legend Ian Tyson will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of Lethbridge next week.

The Alberta singer, who lives near Longview, Alta., is known for writing and producing many iconic songs and albums.

Among them is the famed Four Strong Winds, which talks specifically about his home province.

“It’s very exciting to have one of our country’s foremost musicians and entertainers accept our offer of an honorary degree,” said University of Lethbridge chancellor Janice Varzari in a news release.

“His music has long reflected the values and lifestyles of southern Albertans and his contribution to Canadian culture is indelible.”

Tyson will receive the degree at convocation ceremonies May 29. Corb Lund, the country singer originally from Taber, Alta., who has also achieved music fame, is slated to read Tyson’s citation.

Tyson and his wife, Sylvia, gained fame in the 1960s, writing and touring with the band Great Speckled Bird. Tyson had his own national television show for several years and has published two books.

Over his lengthy career, Tyson has accumulated numerous awards for his work from the Canadian and Calgary country music associations. He is a member of the Juno Hall of Fame and a member of the Order of Canada.
