Feds demand 11,000 grain cars move per week

The Federal government announced an order of council at a Winnipeg press conference this morning that sets minimum volumes of grain that Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway are each required to move.

The railways will be required to increase the volumes carried each week, over the next four weeks, to a combined target of 1,000,000 metric tonnes per week (approximately 5,500 rail cars), which is more than double the volume that is currently being moved.

Penalties for non-compliance are up to $100,000 per day.
