Cereals lower, while canola rises on soft dollar

Soybean oil and a softer Canadian dollar helped canola move up on Thursday’s markets, as traders gave back some of the previous two weeks declines. November canola finished at $495, up $3.70 per tonne on ICE futures. January rose above $500, up $4.10 to $502, March up the same, to $506.90 and May was up $4 to 509.80. July reached $511.50 after climbing $4.20.

Soybeans were down again today on Chicago, falling 4.75 US cents to US$8.18-50 per bushel on September trading.

Chicago corn was off for September, falling three quarters of a cent to $3.40-50.

Wheat gave back gains on overnight trading, on what appeared to be profit-taking on Chicago markets. September Minneapolis spring wheat was off 7.25 cents, falling to $562.25. Kansas City wheat was down 6.5 cents to $5.12-25 and Chicago wheat was off the same amount, falling to $5.08 per bushel.

Cattle on that market were up, while hogs were flat to down.

The Canadian dollar was down .0039 to 77.01 US cents.

Prairie elevator bids mirrored the Chicago markets and ICE canola.

Montana and North Dakota posted elevator cash prices for dark northern spring for September delivery were around the US$4.95 per bushel mark, based on a futures price of $5.83, showing a negative basis of 89 cents. Durum delivered in September was $4.80. Bids for yellow peas were $4.50 to $4.75. Flax was $10, soybeans $6.72. Canola bids were found at $414 per tonne in North Dakota.
