Manitoba’s Chief Veterinarian’s Office euthanized about 1,300 piglets late last week at a farm in west-central Manitoba, after receiving a tip of animal neglect.

Provincial animal welfare inspectors visited the farm and found the piglets in severe distress.

The province has initiated an investigation.

The Winnipeg Free Press reported the barn was near Austin, Man., but provincial officials have not released the location of the barn or the name of the farmer.

Prices for weanling pigs in Manitoba have bottomed out as feed costs have soared this summer, due to the drought in the U.S. Midwest.

Prices are now under $10 per weanling, well below the cost of raising young pigs.
