Pursuing the 4,000 prairie buyers of 23,000 jugs of Pursuit is keeping the folks at Cyanamid busy this spring.

The costly herbicide was packaged in the company’s Puerto Rican plant and jugs sold in Western Canada were filled up to 45 millilitres short due to a malfunctioning weight monitor on the

assembly line.

Compensation is being paid to all buyers, whether or not their jugs were full, say Cyanamid representatives. In Western Canada this will cost the company approximately $250,000. That’s a bargain compared to the $1.8 million already paid out to 11,000 farmers in Ontario and Quebec where the 3.3 litre jugs were short as much as five percent or 165 mL of their total volume.

Eastern farmers’ compensation amounts to $35.50 per jug while western producers will receive $10.36. The company mailed cheques to the eastern buyers but in the West it is still to be determined how the compensation will be paid as administration costs of handling refunds could add up to tens of thousands of dollars.

Pursuit sells in the East for approximately $680 per 3.3 litre jug, while in the West the product commands about $730.
