Canadian grain export company G3 has added two more pieces to its state-of-the-art grain handling network in Western Canada.
This week, the company announced the official opening of two new high-throughput elevators in Alberta.
G3 Morinville, north of Edmonton, and G3 Carmangay, about 150 kilometres south of Calgary, will feature the same high-efficiency infrastructure as G3’s other elevators in Western Canada, the company said in a June 25 news release.
The company now has 12 operational elevators in its western Canadian network and five more under construction.
G3 elevators currently under construction at Wetaskiwin, Alta., and Stettler County are scheduled to open later this summer.
Two additional Alberta facilities are due to open next year at Irricana and Vermilion.
The company also has an elevator under construction near Swift Current, Sask.
That facility is expected to open in the summer of 2021.
G3’s new elevators at Morinville and Carmangay are loop-track facilities, with 42,600 tonnes of storage capacity and 150 rail car spots.
Looped rail tracks allow for continuous loading of unit grain trains, without shunting or switching.
Loaded trains will move grain to G3’s new export terminal, currently under construction in North Vancouver.
The G3 export terminal will also feature a looped rail track, which will eliminate the need to break up grain trains at port and allows for rapid rail car unloads and faster car cycle times.
The G3 terminal facility in North Vancouver is also scheduled to open this summer, completing a network that is expected to set new standards for receiving and shipping grain, the company said.
“These state-of-the-art facilities are transforming the way grain moves across Canada,” said G3’s chief executive officer Don Chapman.
“Our loop-to-loop system connects Prairie to port in a way that ensures high quality Canadian grain gets to market on time, which ultimately benefits Canadian farmers.”
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the company will not be hosting grand opening events at its new Alberta elevators in Morinville and Carmangay.
