Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $38.28 per hundredweight Oct. 4, up from 38.27 on Sept. 27.

U.S. hogs averaged $49.14 on a carcass basis Oct. 4, up from $48.39 Sept. 27.

The U.S. pork cutout was $75.17 per cwt. Oct. 4, up from $73.26 Sept. 27.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 5 was 2.669 million, up from 2.646 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.5 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 5 Signature Five price was C$132.89 per 100 kilograms, down from C$126.91 the previous week.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $60.28, down from $57.57 the previous week.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$4.80-$5 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.85-4 per lb. with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$4.70-$4.80. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.60-3.80 per lb.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,327 sheep and lambs and 102 goats sold Sept. 30. Good new crop lambs sold higher. Well-fed heavy types sold barely steady. All others sold lower. Sheep and goats sold lower.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,683 sheep and 227 goats sold Sept. 30.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $130-$170 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $150-$175, 70-85 lb. were $135-$165, 86-105 lb. were $135-$156 and 106 lb. and heavier were $133-$150.

Wool rams were $87-$112 per cwt. Cull ewes were $95-$146.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $110-$135 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $122-$136, 70-85 lb. were $125-$145, 86-105 lb. were $120-$138 and 106 lb. and heavier were $120-$135.

Hair rams were $90-$111 per cwt. Cull ewes were $85-$120.
