WP livestock report


The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$52.37 per hundredweight July 12, down from $53.96 June 28.

U.S. hogs averaged $67.99 on a carcass basis July 12, up from $65.82 July 5.

The U.S. pork cutout was $71.65 per cwt. July 12, down from $73.17 July 5.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 13 was 2.415 million, down from 2.072 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.279 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 13 Signature Five price was C$166.18 per 100 kilograms, down from $168.07 the previous week.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $75.38, down from $76.24.


The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$4.90-$5.20 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.30 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$4.90-$5.10. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.10.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.


Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 990 sheep and lambs and eight goats sold July 8. Lightweight lambs sold barely steady. All other types sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 996 sheep and 302 goats sold July 8.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $205-$245 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $210-$240, 70-85 lb. were $204-$225, 86-105 lb. were $194-$218 and 106 lb. and heavier were $194-$217.

Wool rams were $90-$134 per cwt. Cull ewes were $80-$161.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$227 per cwt., 55- 69 lb. were $192-$215, 70-85 lb. were $195-$210, 86- 105 lb. were $185-$210 and 106 lb. and heavier were $185-$210.

Hair rams were $103-$158 per cwt. Cull ewes were $85-$135.
