Hogs slide

The United States national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$39.06 per hundredweight March 30, down from $42.61 March 23.

U.S. hogs averaged $48.49 on a carcass basis March 30, down from $52.96 March 23.

The U.S. pork cutout was $70.62 per cwt. March 30, down from $72.64 March 23.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 31 was 2.391 million, down from 2.403 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.344 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 31 Signature Five price was C$130.85 per 100 kilograms, down from $141.88 the week before.

On a per hundredweight basis, price was $59.35 down from $64.36.

Bison up

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$6 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.60 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$6. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.40.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1,243 sheep and lambs and 189 goats sold March 26. All classes of lambs and sheep sold strong. Good goats sold stronger.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 806 sheep and 235 goats sold March 26.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $230-290 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $243-$290, 70 to 85 lb. were $232-$270, 86 to 105 lb. were $196-$230 and 106 lb. and heavier were $175-$200.

Wool rams were $96-$120 per cwt. Cull ewes were $95-$147.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $210-$244 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $220-$260, 70 to 85 lb. were $210-$245, 86 to 105 lb. were $190-$215 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$191.

Hair rams were $97-$115 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$132.
