Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$42.61 per hundredweight March 23, down from $47.18 March 16.

U.S. hogs averaged $52.96 on a carcass basis March 23, down from $57.26 March 16.

The U.S. pork cutout was $72.64 per cwt. March 23, down from $74.30 March 16.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 24 was 2.409 million, down from 2.413 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.323 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 24 Signature Five price was C$141.88 per 100 kilograms, down from $148.35 the previous week. On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $64.36, down from $67.29.

Bison up

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$6 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.60 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$6. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.40.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,551 sheep and lambs and 167 goats sold March 19. A just barely average run of new crop lambs traded lower. Most heavy lambs, sheep and goats sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 948 sheep and 330 goats sold March 19.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $230-290 per cwt., 55- 69 lb. were $243-$290, 70-85 lb. were $232-$270, 86-105 lb. were $192-$227 and 106 lb. and heavier were $175-$200.

Wool rams were $95-$154 per cwt. Cull ewes were $95-$164.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $210-$244 per cwt., 55- 69 lb. were $220-$255, 70-85 lb. were $220-$240, 86-105 lb. were $190-$215 and 106 lb. and heavier were $160-$184.

Hair rams were $100-$126 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$141.
