Most of Canada’s agriculture ministers met in Ottawa May 10 for their last meeting before they are expected to sign the next five-year agricultural policy agreement.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, they reaffirmed their commitment to the framework as outlined in the Calgary Statement issued after last year’s annual meeting.
They will meet again in Newfoundland and Labrador in July “to ensure work is on track to launch the next framework on April 1, 2018,” said the communiqué.
Ministers from Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon were represented by officials.
Ontario proposed a review of business risk management programs that would be addressed at the July meeting.
Federal minister Lawrence MacAulay said the government remains committed to programs that meet farmers’ needs.
