Hogs down

Abundant market-ready hogs pushed prices lower and the Chicago contract hit a 10 month low.

Cooler fall weather is allowing hogs to gain weight faster. Also, hogs backed up a bit early this month when one large U.S. plant temporarily closed. Those hogs are now hitting the market.

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Sept. 16. It was $44.98 Sept. 9.

U.S. hogs averaged $53.63 on a carcass basis Sept. 16, down from $58.21 Sept. 9.

The U.S. pork cutout was $80.34 per hundredweight Sept. 16, down from $81.67 Sept. 9.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to Sept. 16 was 2.359 million, up from 2.084 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.287 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Sept. 16 Signature Three price was C$136.89 per 100 kilograms, or $62.09 per 100 pounds, down from $144.29 or $65.45 the previous week.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said desirable weight Grade A bulls sold up to C$6 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers offered US$4.50 depending on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.75. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.30.

Animals outside desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Sheep

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,067 sheep and 126 goats sold Sept. 12.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $170-$230 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $190-$225, 70-85 lb. were $184-$213, 86-105 lb. were $181-$209 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$198.

Wool rams were $82-$110 per cwt. Cull ewes were $75-$113.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $130-$187 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $180-$205, 70-85 lb. were $170-$190, 86-105 lb. were $180-$196 and 106 lb. and heavier were $185-$195.

Hair rams were $85-$100 per cwt. Cull ewes were $75-$115.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,447 sheep and lambs and 225 goats traded Sept. 12.

Light lambs sold $10-20 lower. Those 80-110 lb. sold barely steady. Lean sheep traded steady, while thicker type sheep sold $5-$10 cwt. lower. Light kid goats sold lower.
