Video: Caution was the word for 2014 from St. Jean Farm Days

I attended St. Jean Farm Days Jan. 8 and 9 and came away with the conclusion that “caution” is going to be the hallmark word of the year for 2014.

On agronomy I spoke with Manitoba Agriculture’s Ingrid Kristjanson, Anastasia Kubinec and Dennis Lange and they warned farmers to not overuse chemicals like glyphosate, to not ignore lone straggler weeds in the field on and field fringes, and to not push rotations and think seed treatments can make up for the increased disease risk.

On markets I spoke with the CWB’s Bruce Burnett and Manitoba credit unions adviser Brad Magnusson and I got the strong message that farmers can’t count on high prices coming back any time soon and that they need to hedge carefully and watch their costs.
